The 24-year-old woman, named locally as Li Zhenghua, was found with her jaws clamped firmly around the baby’s arm, according to a nurse.
Subsequently, the nurse raised the alarm and tried to pull the baby from his mother, but the latter refused to let go, which compelled the doctors to use an implement to prize her off the child before giving her a sedative.
The cannibalistic attack took place at a hospital in the Shenzhen city in southern China’s Guangdong Province, where the woman had been found in labor on the street.
“It was really shocking, the arm was badly damaged and suffered not only heavy bruising but bleeding as a result of the bite,” a hospital spokesman said.
“Fortunately, doctors managed to insert something to stop her closing her teeth and then levered her jaws apart,” he added.
