for people in the Metropolitan, Illawarra and South Coast forecast districts.
Issued at 4:28 pm EST on Friday 11 April 2014.
GALE FORCE WINDS AND LARGE WAVES FOR THE SOUTHERN COAST
Weather Situation
A low pressure system currently developing off the NSW coast near the Victorian
border is forecast to deepen and move slowly to the north/northeast this
evening. The system appears likely to reaching peak intensity late tonight or
early Saturday, bringing gale force winds and large waves to the South Coast.
As the system continues moving north/northeast during Saturday morning, gales
and large waves may affect the coastal fringe through the Illawarra and Sydney
areas. Conditions are expected to ease later on Saturday.
Damaging winds averaging around 65 km/h with peak gusts of 100 km/h are
forecast to affect parts of the the South Coast forecast district this evening
and early Saturday, more likely along the coastal fringe, extending to the
Illawarra and Sydney coasts during Saturday morning.
Very heavy surf which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion is
forecast for the South Coast forecast district later tonight, possibly
extending to the Illawarra and Sydney coasts during Saturday. Beach conditions
in these areas could be dangerous, particularly on southerly-facing stretches
of coast, and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
– Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
– Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
– Keep clear of fallen power lines.
For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
The next warning will be issued by 11:00 pm EST Friday.
